Today’s LiveWire Spotlight examines ten high-level indicators and sub-indicators of electric system reliability reviewed by NERC’s Board of Trustees at their quarterly meeting held virtually last May. The metrics measure various aspects of actual year-over-year BES performance ranging from the impact of severe events and the instances of the more routine outages. The Q1 results describe a highly reliable and stable system operating in accordance with the ERO’s charter written in 2007, but which may not be quantifying performance aligned with evolving societal expectations.
NERC’s Board of Trustees made no public comment after their review of the Q1 reliability indicators. However, a draft of the 2021 State of Reliability Report was presented earlier on the call hinting that severe weather and cyber-attacks metrics are in the works.
