Today’s LiveWire Spotlight evaluates the final report of an incident that captured the attention of WECC’s Events Analysis and Situational Awareness team during an oscillation scan, which they routinely perform after a line Fault occurs near solar PV Facilities.  In this case, a relatively routine Fault led to the loss of 1000 MW of solar photovoltaic PV plant capacity extending from the LA Basin out to the Nevada/Arizona borders.

The availability of Fault support from renewable resources is increasingly becoming one of NERC’s top reliability concerns.  Severe penalties may be levied if an electric system outage occurs and it is found that a GO did not act upon the lessons learned from this incident.
