Today’s LiveWire Spotlight looks at the initial Draft of VAR-002-5, which acts on the findings from two NERC expert review teams that the standard deals poorly with inverter-based resource (IBR) volt/VAR control mechanisms. First, a 2020 IBR Task Force identified flaws in the requirements to report changes in volt/VAR controller and reactive capability status to TOPs. Second, a 2016 Periodic Review Team offered a series of recommendations after a close inspection of all six VAR-002-4.1 voltage and reactive requirements.
The initial draft of VAR-002-5 and its supporting materials have been posted for a 45-day industry stakeholder review and a concurrent vote to approve or disapprove it. Your feedback and ballots are due back to the project team by December 19, 2022.
