Today’s LiveWire Spotlight looks at a presentation given to the Planning Committee regarding the final disposition of EPRI’s Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD) Research Work Plan. The Plan consisted of nine tasks conducted at NERC’s behest to facilitate a better understanding of solar flares capable of damaging transformers or destabilizing the BES. Access to the resultant tools and technical reports is available to the public free of charge.
The GIC monitor and magnetometer data collection process begins on October 1 and will last six months. Afterwards, the GIC models will be tweaked based on a comparison to EPRI’s simulation tools. Entities using those models should be sure to keep them updated.
