Today’s LiveWire Spotlight examines the planning seminar co-sponsored by the North American Transmission Forum, NERC, and the Electric Power Research Institute promoting the most advanced design and deployment tools available to entities looking to integrate emerging carbon-free technologies into their portfolios.  Over the two day session, presenters captured the prevailing views of technology forecasters about the structure of the future grid, the solutions that may remove obstacles to its delivery, the prevailing cyber-threats to the digital grid, the need to conduct Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) studies, and how electric vehicle growth affects its performance.

The Seminar presenters affirm that societal goals to deploy a functional digital grid by 2030 can be achieved – with full capability by 2050.  Some caution is advised as the cost, NIMBY, and misplaced activism are strong counter-factors resisting a successful outcome.
