Today’s LiveWire Spotlight examines NERC’s latest strategy document describing their plan to address the growing risk to BPS reliability posed by the rapid transition to distributed energy resources (DERs).   The plan breaks down the approach into core tenets addressing DER modeling, planning studies, operational impacts, and regulatory considerations.

NERC’s DER strategy is designed to prevent a recurrence of the August 2019 U.K. wide-area grid disturbance where 25 aggregate DERs tripped off-line during a Fault.  Smaller, but similar events have already been seen in California, and the ERO’s concern is only growing.
