Today’s LiveWire Spotlight evaluates NERC’s assessment of the adequacy of BPS generation and transmission systems to deliver projected demand in North America from December through next February. The report concludes that nearly every assessment area in the U.S. and Canada will be able to deliver this winter’s forecasted energy usage based on normal demand and average weather conditions. However, it warns that the risks of extreme weather and fuel limitations during an extended cold snap overshadow the traditional measures used to predict winter performance.
The public’s expectation that generation and transmission Facilities hold up during extreme weather is only growing stronger – even as BES resilience is being weakened by the growth in intermittent resource use. This challenge will remain NERC’s highest priority over the next decade.
