Today’s LiveWire Spotlight looks at NERC’s 2020 Reliability Report, which evaluates the North American Bulk Power System’s resilience, security, frequency response, and exposure to reliability threats during Calendar Year 2019.  The analysis concludes that BPS energy delivery, resource capacity, transmission miles, and performance were more than adequate in 2019 – however reliability issues with inverter-based resources and cyber security are starting to emerge.

Look for NERC to continue to focus on information sharing and awareness-based solutions to reliability threats.  Over the longer term, industry should look to employ technological advancements (like battery storage) to permanently eliminate the most persistent issues.
