Today’s LiveWire Spotlight looks at NERC’s 2020-2021 Winter Assessment, which evaluates the adequacy of BPS generation and transmission systems to deliver projected demand from December through next February. The report concludes that every assessment area in the U.S., Canada, and Northern Mexico will be able to deliver this winter’s normal forecasted energy usage; although there is growing alarm that increased use of renewables may harm winter adequacy results.
The public’s expectation that generation and transmission Facilities hold up during extreme weather is only growing stronger – even as BES resilience is being weakened by the growth in intermittent resource use. This challenge will remain NERC’s highest priority over the next decade.
