Today’s LiveWire Spotlight examines NERC’s latest Long-Term Reliability Assessment of the Bulk Power System’s reliability, adequacy, and security over the 10-year planning horizon.  After analyzing demand forecasts, resource capacity growth, and transmission build-out data collected from 21 North American assessment areas, the Reliability Assessment and Performance Analysis (RAPA) team identified four key findings that could substantially change the way BPS planning and operations are managed in the long-term.

Over the next decade, advances in natural-gas extraction techniques, PV solar panels, battery storage, and electric car technologies should enhance the viability of clean energy resources.  The challenge will be to minimize learning curve outages during the transition.
