Today’s LiveWire Spotlight looks at three new NERC requirements, two with multiple sub-requirements, that become mandatory and effective next month. TPL-007-4 R3, R4, and R8 are the latest requirements to take effect in regard to the simulation of geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) caused by solar flares. They addresses the threat of geomagnetically-induced currents (GIC) intense enough to damage transformers or to generate destabilizing reactive power transients.
TPL-007-4 requirements R3, R4, and R8 and their sub-requirements take effect January 1. Going forward, the applicable Planning Coordinators and Transmission Planners must comply with, and have evidence that they are complying with, these requirements.
