Today’s LiveWire Spotlight looks at FERC’s letter approving without comment the retirement of FAC-010-2, and the updates to FAC-011-4 and FAC-014-3 – i.e., the System Operating Limit (SOL) standards.  The updates introduces a new structure naturally linking planning and operating limits; augmented by Glossary updates identifying what SOLs are, not how they assure reliability.  The letter concurrently ratifies the modifications made to six other FAC, IRO, PRC, and TOP standards that rely on operations or planning limits to identify applicable (critical) infrastructure.

The SOL standards and associated NERC Glossary terms will take effect in the U.S. on April 1, 2024.  By that time, entities who develop and notify others of system limits; or operate in accordance or own equipment critical to them; must be compliant with the new approach.
