Today’s LiveWire Spotlight examines the FERC’s approval of CIP-012-1, the NERC standard addressing the confidentiality and integrity of BES data exchanged between Control Centers.  CIP-012-1 consists of a single requirement (with three sub-requirements) calling for Responsible Entities to implement plans that identify…

  •  …the security protections used to mitigate the risks.
  •  …where the security protections are applied
  • …the security responsibilities of each entity sharing a Control Center.

FERC Order 866 implies, but not does not directly state, that data availability controls must be in place when CIP-012-1 takes effect on April 1, 2022.  Clients should begin to assess the implications should the Commission decide that the threat is too great to allow a delay.
