Today’s LiveWire Spotlight examines a NERC White Paper explaining the increasing need to improve electric system fast frequency response (FFR) to offset the penetration of inverter-based resources. This could very well require BAs to perform FFR-related reliability assessments in order to sustain Control Area frequency above Underfrequency Load Shedding trip levels as system inertia declines.
The adoption rate of inverter-based systems in a BA Area affects the complexity of the studies needed to assure frequency stability. But even in low-penetration zones, the BA may want to require new deployments to supply advanced FFR to lessen disruption in inertial response.
