Today’s LiveWire Spotlight evaluates the two latest NERC’s Lessons Learned analyzing “teachable moments” where grid reconfigurations were required in the operations time frame to mitigate electric system threats. In the first, System Operators carefully preplanned the switching tactics just prior to an unusually active winter storm; resulting in successful performance. In the second Lesson Learned, a thrill-seeker climbed to the top of a high voltage transmission tower, requiring the TOP to de-energize its conductors and re-configure service until his extraction.
NERC has growing expectations of system resilience to extreme weather, variable resource capacity growth, and human misconduct. They may levy penalties if entities are not able to rapidly reconfigure the grid to deal with abnormalities in line with these Lessons Learned.
