Today’s LiveWire Spotlight looks at a NERC Webinar addressing Electric Power Research Institute’s (EPRI) interim findings concerning High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulses (HEMP). There are three components of HEMP, but the EPRI study has so far only been able to focus on one aspect (E3) – which impacts the electric system in a manner akin to that induced by solar-produced geomagnetic disturbances.

The findings from the research on the E3 component of HEMP could lead FERC to direct the development of new transformer maintenance reliability requirements. Further updates may be considered once the study is completed.
