Today’s LiveWire Spotlight looks at a newly released NERC guideline describing the best practices employed by system planners to assure sufficient Reactive Power is available to avoid BES voltage instability. The document also provides similar guidance to operating entities who must maintain electric system integrity during voltage transients without placing equipment or safety at risk.

Reactive control is one of FERC’s key – and growing – reliability concerns as the widespread adoption of renewable resources and other cutting edge technologies continues. Their impact on electric system voltage control is still to be determined.
