Today’s LiveWire Spotlight examines FERC Docket RD14-11-000, which orders the uncontested approval of two updated NERC standards that govern the control of voltage and reactive flows within the Bulk Electric System.

  • VAR-001-4 identifies the Transmission Operator’s obligations to develop and distribute voltage/reactive specifications, forecast support resource needs, and manage Real-time adherence within their operating footprint.
  • VAR-002-3 requires Generator Owners and Operators to provide voltage and reactive support at the point of interconnection with the transmission system.

VAR-001-4 and VAR-002-3 will take effect in the U.S. on October 1, 2014. All the requirements applicable to Generator Owners, Generator Operators, and Transmission Operators will become mandatory and enforceable at that time.
