Today’s LiveWire Spotlight examines the second posting of the NERC Reliability Standard addressing transmission system planning preparedness for geomagnetic disturbances (GMD). TPL-007-1 looks to minimize the effect of geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) that can damage high-voltage transformers or create destabilizing reactive power spikes.

TPL-007-1 Version 2 and its support documentation have been posted on the NERC web site for a 45 day review and concurrent ballot. Clients have until July 30, 2014 to return comments to the project team and vote on the standard.
