Today’s LiveWire Spotlight examines publicly posted correspondence from NERC’s CEO to four U.S. Senators regarding last April’s sniper attack on the Metcalf substation outside of San Jose, California. In it, he looks to defer concerns that the Bulk Electric System is overly vulnerable to similar coordinated physical incursions that may include three or more well-trained and well-armed assailants.

At this point in time, it is unclear whether the U.S. Senate will take further legislative action on BES physical security. That could change quickly if another high-profile event should occur – particularly if electricity service is impaired as a result.
